Junior High Volleyball Loses First Game by an Inch

By Gabriel Moncivais

The South Haven Junior High Volleyball team played its first game at Central, KS, with Junior Varsity (JV) starting at 4:30 p.m. and Varsity starting at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday. Both teams lost close games, ending with JV almost neck to neck with its competitor, the Central Junior High Team.

The volleyball team is young this year, being made up of a majority sixth-grade girls. Though all of them gave their best effort, the players will continue their improvement as they grow this season.

Ciara Billington, the assistant coach who has worked with the junior high volleyball team for five years, noticed that the team did well, stating, “All the kids did great! I am incredibly proud of all the sixth graders who stepped up. This was
their first game, and they did an excellent job!”

Some skills are still being developed. For example, their loss could have been due to being nervous as some of the players had never played on a large volleyball court and only in rec centers, in which case this experience will help the team improve.

“JV was close to winning, but…I could see that they needed some work and practice,” Billington says. She also states that it could also be since this was their first game to be played this year, but Billington hopes that, over time, the team will see a lot of improvement, and will be better than ever. The team plays against Flinthills for their next game on Thursday.
