On September 6, 2024, the South Sumner Cross Country Team ran at their first meet in Clearwater. The high school and eighth graders ran the two mile race while the sixth and seventh graders ran the mile. The majority of the high school team medaled, and the whole team ran really well.
Avery Strickland, a sophomore at South Haven High School, placed 12th. This is Strickland’s second year running and she was recently interviewed by VYPE which is a high school sports magazine.
Strickland, Addison Heater (junior), and Annabelle Burden (junior) all medaled in the high school girls race. Zak Eaton (sophomore) and Mason Noll (sophomore) medaled in the high school boys race. Carlee Heater and Makenzie Trillo placed in the eighth grade girls race.
The team is slowly growing and gaining more athletes who love to run. When Strickland was asked why she runs she said, “I enjoy running, It’s my thing. I can always count on being able to run. It’s a stable thing in my life because it doesn’t change and I’m not paralyzed yet, so I can keep running.” Strickland also says how much she loves her team and they are why it’s so great.
Noll, another sophomore at South Haven High School, says his favorite memory from cross country is when he got first place 3 times in a row.
This team has a good season ahead of them and we can’t wait to see it.
