The 2024 Red Ribbon Week at South Haven Schools brought smiles to many faces while also teaching students the importance of the drug awareness campaign with lessons given from teachers and even from the sheriff’s department. Red Ribbon Week is here to mobilize communities, educate the youth, and encourage them to do the right thing in situations involving alcohol and drugs.
To allow the students to express themselves as “drug free” the week had a theme and days to dress up to go along with it. The theme was “Life Is A Movie.”
Thursday, Oct. 24 was “Red Out” which was based on the Movie “Turning Red.” Mostly all of the students were wearing something red which was a great way to start off Red Ribbon Week! The students that won this day were eighth grader Brooklyn Dvorak and fifth grader Lila Kupka.
Friday, Oct. 25 was “Dress as an athlete or dress in Outlaw purple day” which was based on the movie “Friday Night Lights.” If students weren’t dressed up as football players or cheerleaders, then they were wearing something purple to support the High School Outlaws with their game against Conway Springs, along with drug awareness of course. There were no winners on this day.
Monday, Oct. 28 was “Hawaiian Day” which was based on the movie “Lilo & Stitch.” Surprisingly, not many students really dressed up for this day, but the ones that did were dressed in floral and beachy shirts and wearing lei necklaces. The students that won this day were freshman Ayleigh Nixon, eighth grader Gweniver Gould, and third grader Everlie Billey.
Tuesday, Oct. 29 was “USA day” which was based on the movie “Captain America.” Again, there weren’t too many students that were dressed up that day but for the ones that were, they were dressed head to toe in red, white, and blue colors! The students that won this day were sophomore Piper Dodds, third grader Tyler Briethupt, and fourth grader Audrina Kimzie.
Wednesday, Oct. 30 was “On Wednesdays we wear pink” which was based on the movie “Mean Girls.” The school was filled with pink colors, whether it was just a pink shirt or students covered in pink paint. The students that won this day were senior Hannah Clausen, eighth grader Kylie Thompkins, and third grader Charliee Challis.
Thursday, Oct. 31 was “Elementary – Halloween costumes, and High School – Dress in your Christmas best or Halloween Costumes.” The high school students were wandering around in their Halloween costumes and occasionally you would see some festive students ready for Christmas! At the end of the day, the Elementary students walked down the school while the upperclassmen gave them candy and their applause. The students that won this day were sophomores Sydnie and Witney Goebel, second grader Rowdy Theurer, fifth grader Loren Kuchar, fourth graders Clara Aguilar and Della Heater, third grader Savannah Bacon, and kindergartener Liz Pond.
The 2024 Red Ribbon Week taught students important values and was very enjoyable!
