Choir: A Transformative and Motivating Art

By Gabriel Moncivais

Choir has been involved with South Haven Schools for many years, and has won many awards ever since. Choir has given students freedom to express their love and vocals through songs and performances and has able to give some students some scholarships of it.

For this year, South Haven’s Choir teacher–who is also the Band teacher–Keeley Coon, has started her first year in South Haven and loves the environment the students have given her. With choir, not only does she teach how to sing, she teaches students teamwork and “how transformative music can be in their lives.” Currently, the students have been resonating with a Christmas song, “A Winter Carol” written by Earlene Rentz, and has challenged the Choir members to learn how to harmonize with each other. Coon also states that being in Choir can help students beyond just music, saying that it, “urges them to multitask and help with their teamwork skills, even if you want to work with them or not.”

There will be a Christmas Concert that will take place in Dec. 3, 2024, and Coon would love to see everyone to listen to the end product of all the progress the students have achieved.
