The South Haven Scholar’s Bowl Team Has Their First Competition Of December

By Claire Minor

On Dec. 2, 2024 the South Haven Scholar’s Bowl team traveled to Sedan to compete against teams such as Argonia, Caldwell, West Elk, and more.

For those who don’t know, Scholar’s Bowl is where you travel to different schools. The teams are asked a certain amount of questions under a specific topic. The topics will rotate until all questions are asked. The points go by 10s. If someone buzzes in or hits the slap pad, they will be identified and then answer.

The varsity team includes Witney Goebel, Hannah Clausen, Aiden Scott, and Sydney Hall. Varsity won against Argonia and lost against all the others, but from ties, so not by much. The junior varsity team includes Avalin Hughes, Sydnie Goebel, Jessica Broyles, and Madison ferguson. JV also won a round.

Sophomore at South Haven Schools and a member of the Scholar’s Bowl team, Witney Goebel has been doing Scholar’s Bowl for three years, including this one. When asked what W. Goebel’s favorite memory is, she replied, “My favorite memory of Scholar’s Bowl is when we say really dumb answers like Abraham Washington, or that Mexican is a language. I also enjoy seeing familiar people.” W. Goebel said that her least favorite part of Scholar’s Bowl is the schools themselves, expressing how some of them are just unenjoyable to go to.

Another Sophomore at South Haven Schools and member of the Scholar’s Bowl team, Sydnie Goebel, is experiencing her first year in the competition. When asked what S. Goebel’s favorite part was, she replied “There were so many fun parts about it. The car ride back we watched the movie ‘Crushed’ and Frank Gracie. There were some parts of the varsity matches where Maddy, Jessica, and I were laughing so hard we had to cover our faces so we wouldn’t get in trouble for interrupting.” S. Goebel said that her least favorite part of Scholar’s Bowl was second guessing her answer, not buzzing in, and actually being right. S. Goebel said that this is her and a few others first time going to a Scholar’s Bowl competition. They decided to join as a joke but enjoyed it so much that they are all going back for the next one!

The South Haven Scholar’s Bowl team may not be competing for the wins, but from the thoughts of the team, it is definitely an event that is worth trying out!
