A Fight Against the Raiders

By Annabelle Burden

On Feb. 14, 2025 the South Haven Cardinals played against Central High School. This game was also the Homecoming game, and the girls won while the boys sadly lost, though they still managed to put up a mighty fight. The girls game ended 51-22 and the boys game ended 62-64.

The boys played a hard game and, although they lost, they still played very hard. When some of them were asked what the attitude was like among the boys, their assistant coach, Christian Ward said, “I would say determined but also defeated.” Ward was asked how things could have gone differently and he said, “Defensively, we could have shut down number fifteen before he got hot and the outcome of the game probably would have been different.”

Maddox Pond, a sophomore and a starter on the boys basketball team, was asked what the attitude was like and he said, “We were having a mix between arguing and then happy.” He also said it could have gone differently by, “actually making our shots and not allowing second chance opportunities.”

The girls game went well with a win and, although the girls won, they still had to make sure to put up a fight. There was a big pressure to win knowing it was Homecoming night. The feelings during this game were up and down, with excitement when the team would be doing well and then getting a little down when there was a missed shot or a bad play. In the end, the girls won again against Central.

Earlier in the season, these girls played Central and it was a rough game, with a lot of fouls, but in the end, the girls won and they proved they could win once again.

These games were both great games and although not both teams won, the boys put up a great fight and so did the girls. Heading towards the end of the season, all these athletes know they will have to push no matter what and work hard. These athletes have worked hard throughout the entire season and we are excited to see how far the get.
