On Thursday, March 27, 2025, the South Sumner Outlaws traveled to Oxford, KS to play the first softball game of the season. This game was a double-header between the Wildcats and Outlaws. The first game was a loss with the score being 8 to 15. The score of the second game was 18 to 10 with the Outlaws on top.
This year’s coach from South Haven is Melissa Jolly-Breightaupt. Melissa has coached softball for six years, with this being her second season at South Haven. When asked how she thinks the team will do this season, Jolly-Breightaupt said, “I feel that our team this season should be well. We have eight returning starters from last year with a solid group of freshmen to add to that line up.”
She thinks the toughest team this year will be CVD and some goals they have for the season is to become league champions, then regional champions so they can advance to state.
One of the juniors and returning starters from last year is Addison Heater. Heater plays as first base for the Outlaws. When asking Heater how they did against Oxford, she said, “Really well the second game we figured out our dynamic, we could definitely work on our batting.”
When we asked her what some personal and team goals were, Heater said, “For myself, I would like to steal a lot of bases and as a team, we want to make it to state.”
So good luck Outlaws and hope you have a good season.
