On September 12, the fifth graders at SHS spent the entire day participating in Safety Day, an event designed to teach students practical safety skills in a fun and engaging way.
The students, led by their teacher Jared “Mr. G” Grillot, rotated through activities that covered topics such as ATV safety, fire safety, first aid, agriculture safety, car crash awareness, and the dangers of electric power lines.
Fifth grader Reid Blaylock, who has attended SHS for five years, shared that his favorite part of the day was learning ATV safety. “I felt very good afterwards,” Balylock said. He partnered with his friend Kingston for activities and enjoyed a classic school lunch of sloppy joes.
Classmate Ella Strickland also had a positive experience. “We learned about fire, car crashes, agriculture, electric power lines, four-wheelers, and first aid,” she explained. Strickland worked with her partner during the first aid activity, where they practiced bandaging. She described the day as “great” and said the lessons will help her be “really good” at staying safe.
The day wasn’t all seriousness, though. Students got to spend time with friends, enjoy their lunches ranging from homemade turkey sandwiches to cafeteria favorites and reflect on how they can use these lessons in their daily lives.
Overall, Safety Day was a success. Students left feeling more confident about how to handle real-life emergencies and how to make safe choices in their everyday routines.
