Back and Forth Rallies: JH Cardinal Volleyball plays the Oxford Wildcats

By Trista Metzinger

Last Thursday at Caldwell, South Haven Junior High School played the Oxford Wildcats in two competitive back and forth games.

During the varsity game, Lila Wiiest gets her team a lead in the first set of 7-6, but a few uncalled balls and messy bumps causes Oxford to get ahead 8-16. Fortunately, due to Kylie Thompkins’ solid hits and Natalie Betzen’s good serves, the team got up again. However, due to miscommunication, Oxford won the set 17-25.

After support and encouragement from Coach Winter and Ciara Billington, the team wins the second set with strong bumps, serves from Betzen and hits from Wiiest and Thompkins. The score is 20-25. The Cardinals are fighting but Oxford unfortunately takes the win.

Meanwhile, at the JV game, despite the hustle from the girls, the Wildcats take the first few points. Maddy Reid and Zoey Dvorak used their serves to get a few aces and score some points, getting the score up to 19-11. Thanks to this, the Cardinals won the game 34-24.

Overall, the team had some great plays, but are looking for improvement. Thompkins says they could improve on communication and encourages people to go to the next game “to help support and see how interesting this game goes.”

The JH Lady Cardinals play again on October 16 at Sedan.
