SH JH Boys Basketball Assistant Coach Gives His Insights on the First JH Boys Basketball Game of the Season

By Trista Metzinger

Science teacher Joey Nunley cleans up after his last class of the day on November 20, 2025. The students leave, and as the door closes, Nunley’s secret double life comes to show. He puts on his red sneakers, turns off the lights, and hits the basketball court with South Haven Junior High basketball players, ready to win.

Nunley trains the junior varsity side of the JH team, alongside the varsity coach Cody Wolf. Nunley has been coaching basketball for three years at Eureka, and now here in South Haven. When asked why he coaches, Nunley said “I like basketball. I like helping kids do better at what they want to do.”  Furthermore, when asked how he thinks he does as a coach, he responded, “I think how I do as a coach is reflected in how they play.”

So far, Nunley is proud of the kids. He said they remember plays and do what he tells them to do. He does want them to improve on shots and passes. He also wants them to improve on fouls, saying “fouls are inevitable, but don’t make stupid fouls.”  Nunley notes that they are getting better everyday and they are excited to start winning games.

The game starts at 5:00 p.m. Thursday for the boys here in South Haven. Nunley encourages people to come to see the team win and support the young players.
