During the chilly month of October, mad scientists – or rather, students – created spooky stories for the South Haven Middle School Mary Shelley Writing Contest. The contest was hosted by middle school ELA teacher David Hole and entries were judged by the high school journalism class.
The winner, eighth-grader Taylor Percifield, wrote a poem titled “Halloween” for her entry, describing the creepy things of the holiday. Percfield says her encouragement for the article came from her brother, Dallas, who writes poems with her all the time. When asked why she thinks she won, Percifield answered “rhymes are typically my stuff.”
Our runner up was Lila Kupka, a sixth-grader, who wrote the story “Shapeshifter.” Following her was seventh grader Natalie Betzen’s “Whispers Beyond the Door.”
