What is South Haven News?
South Haven News is a news website run by students of the South Haven High School 21st Century Journalism class. In this class, students will learn the basics of journalism, the history of journalism, the legal and ethical concerns regarding journalism, the intersections between technology and journalism, the use of social media and digital citizenship within journalism, and the knowledge required to work and study within the journalism industry.

Mr. Jonathan Pettyjohn
Jonathan Pettyjohn is a high school English Language Arts teacher at South Haven High School. Pettyjohn enjoys American Literature and coaching track and cross country. Pettyjohn looks forward to teaching news agency case studies this year. Pettyjohn is glad to be teaching journalism for his fourth year offering the class and fifth year at South Haven.
Claire Minor is a junior at South Haven High School and she has been going to South Haven Schools since Pre-K. Minor enjoys all classes and getting ready before school. Minor looks forward to trying out new styles of writing this year. In her free time she likes to spend money, preferably not her own.
Hydie Goans is a ninth grade student at South Haven High School. Goans enjoys art and gaming. Goans looks forward to learning about independence this year. Goans is excited to finally be a freshman in high school and is looking forward to interviewing people!
Trista Metzinger is a ninth grade student at South Haven High School. Metzinger enjoys playing indie games, listening to music, and writing her own original stories. Metzinger is currently excited and a little nervous about the upcoming future. However, Metzinger is ready and hyped to be learning all about the where’s, who’s, and what’s of South Haven.
Xava Wiens is a freshman student at South Haven High School. Wiens enjoys geometry class and playing sports. Wiens looks forward to learning about writing and proper writing format this year. Wiens is excited to learn new skills this year.
Jayden Woodfin is a ninth grade student at South Haven High School. Woodfin enjoys art and Dungeons and Dragons. Woodfin looks forward to learning about interviewing this year. Woodfin can’t wait to write about our school and have others read about it.
Laney Luecke is a senior at South Haven High School. Luecke enjoys taking naps in Missy Russell’s classroom. Luecke looks forward to learning about the basics of journalism this year. Luecke says she can’t wait to graduate from South Haven High School.
Danica Browning is a junior at South Haven High School. Browning enjoys English class and hanging out with friends or reading. Browning looks forward to learning about the different styles of journalism this year. Browning also enjoys cheerleading, softball, hanging out with friends and reading outside of school.
Annabelle Burden is a junior at South Haven Schools. Burden likes AG classes and enjoys running. Burden looks forward to learning about new ways to keep people engaged and interested. This is Burden’s third year at South Haven Schools and second year in journalism.
Gabriel Moncivais (MAHN-see-VIE-is) is a junior student at South Haven High School. Moncivais enjoys Algebra II and loves creating character designs in his spare time. Moncivais looks forward to learning about improving writing skills and how to form good presentations this year. He is introverted but would love to help and comfort anyone who needs it.
Sydnie Rae is a tenth grade student at South Haven High School. Rae enjoys ELA, being active, and staying busy. Rae looks forward to improving her writing and editing skills this year. In her free time, she also enjoys sports such as cheer, volleyball, and track.
Dalton Kelly is a student in his sophomore year from South Haven, KS. Kelly enjoys being a part of weights because he loves to lift. Kelly’s favorite activity is away games in sports because the bus rides get funny sometimes. Kelly is excited to learn about perfecting a journal by the end of the year. Kelly is involved in football, basketball, and track and field. Kelly enjoys being in football and helping younger kids get to know the game of football. This is Kelly’s 13th year year being at South Haven Schools.
Michelle Tevington is a sophomore at South Haven High School. Tevington enjoys going to AG contests and livestock shows. Tevington’s best friends are her show animals. Tevington looks forward to learning about the importance of journalism this year.
Emmalee Burden is in her freshman year at South Haven High School. Burden enjoys AG classes, volleyball, and reading. Burden looks forward to learning about how to engage people into her reading this year. This is Burden’s second year attending South Haven schools.
Carley Russell is a freshman student at South Haven High School. Russell enjoys AG classes, volleyball and reading. Russell looks forward to learning to write in ways to engage people this year. Russell has been at South Haven Schools for 12 years.
