The South Sumner Outlaw team, coached by Melissa Jolly-Breithaupt and Byron White, hits the field ready to play. JV players line the fence, cheering and laughing, as the whole team celebrates some awesome plays and rethink previous losses.
The season started off slow. Many times the players were told to be confident in the batter’s box, but no one hit. Players were told to communicate out on the field, yet not a word was spoken.
Despite this setback, the Lady Outlaws showed up to work everyday after school. They hit in the cage, worked on fielding, footwork, and refined the basics.
The big change came at a home game when the ladies just kept hitting the ball one after another. Coach Breithaupt said “hits are contagious” and when the girls hit, the confidence seemed to go up.
In short, after the Cedarvale/Dexter game, one of the hardest games in the season, Coach Jolly Breithaupt said that one inning beats us, but we just need to find a way to score the moment the game starts.
Overall, the ladies worked hard this season. New players have seen genuine improvement, with JV having one game this season, and a possibility of one May 6th.
As for the varsity, seniors Ava Newell, Ella Risley, Emma Rohrbaugh, Brecken Hutsler, all part this year after enjoying playing the season with each other. Maddy Ferguson, a junior, has pitched three hundred strikeouts in her high school career.
The girls, as of May 1st, have a record of 7-7. They play Thursday for the softball tournament.
